February 2001
The question-of-the-month
for February comes from Juan in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a 31 year old
who asks about the popular high fat, moderate protein, low carb diets.
His question is:
Dear Mike:
First of all I want to
say that you are very popular in Argentina. You have a lot of fans
here. I want to know what you think about the high fat, moderate
protein and low carb diets like Bodyopus or the Anabolic Diet. Are
these diets good or do you prefer another one?
Dear Juan:
Thank you for your question.
It's always good to hear from people who reside outside the United
States.
The high fat, moderate protein, low
carb diets are very popular these days, and for good reason - they
work. However, before you jump in with both feet and start using
one of these diets, you should know a few things. Like I said
before, these diets do work, but it is very hard to stay on the program
for an extended period of time. For someone who wants to lose
weight or get ready for a contest, these diets can be quite
effective. I think they work best when you have a high carb day
every so often. For example: 3 low carb days would be followed by
one high carb day and then repeat. This is a good schedule for
someone who wants to put on size and minimize fat gain. If you are
constantly on a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet, your glycogen
levels will become depleted and your muscles will flatten out. By
occasionally adding in the carbs, you will replace the glycogen in your
muscles. The added carbs will also enhance your metabolism.
Thanks
again for your question, Juan. I hope you found the information
helpful and I clearly answered your question.
