February 2004

The question-of-the-month for February comes from Gokhan in Turkey, a 29 year old bodybuilder whose goal is to place in the top three in Turkey's National Championships.  His question is:

Dear Mike:

I don’t like my upper chest.  Can you tell me how to perform upper chest exercises?

Dear Gokhan:

Thank you for submitting a great question.  Upper chest is a part of the physique many people have difficulty developing.  Having a well-developed upper chest is vital for anyone who wants to do well in bodybuilding.

The exercises I recommend for the upper chest are:

Incline dumbbell press: 3 x 5-8 reps
Incline barbell press: 3 x 5-8 reps
Heavy incline cable flies: 3 x 5-8 reps

You may use all three exercises for your chest workout or incorporate one or two into your regular chest workout.

I also want to share with you some tips for building a great chest:

  • Stay heavy

  • Do not overtrain

  • Do no more than 9-12 sets per chest workout

  • Train chest one time per week

  • Heavy front military presses will also help your upper chest.

Well, that’s it, Gokhan.  I hope this information helps and I wish you well in your upcoming competitions in Turkey.  As always, don't forget to visit the Past Qs & As and my Training Tips section for more great tips and training info.

Until next month, train hard and stay healthy.
