From Fredrick in Texas, a high school football player whose goal is to play running back in college next year.  His question is:

Dear Mike:

I was wondering if the GNC 100% Mega Whey Protein will increase my muscle mass and weight like it says it will?  Also, what can I do to get bigger arms and legs?  I want to have the arms and legs that the NFL running backs have.

Dear Fredrick:

Thank you for submitting a great question.  As far as the protein, whey is a good source, however, for maximum muscle repair and growth, it is much better to use a product that is a blend of proteins.  A blend provides superior assimilation and utilization.

As for your question regarding training, it is more important for you to focus on overall strength, power, and explosiveness than specific body parts such as arms.  Although big arms can look impressive, they will not help you become a great running back.

I recommend incorporating plyometrics into your training program along with these basic strength exercises:

  • Squats

  • Bench Press

  • Weighted Lunges

  • Deadlifts

  • Hanging Cleans

  • Clean and Press

The above exercises should make up the core of your workout regimen.  Of course, you will also incorporate isolation exercises into your program as well – just make sure you don’t overtrain, especially during football season.  This is extremely important.  More is not always better!

You can find a lot of good information on the internet about plyometrics.

Thanks again, Fredrick, for the question, and good luck with your football career.
