March 2005
The question-of-the-month for March comes
from Aaron in Florida, a 22 year old who would like to become
a competitive bodybuilder, but doesn't know where to begin.
His question is:
Dear Mike:
I'm
22 years old and very interested in becoming a competitive
bodybuilder. I don't know the exact steps I need to take
in order to accomplish this goal and was wondering if you
could offer me some great advice. Thanks, Mike!
Dear Aaron:
This is a great question,
and I'm really surprised no one has submitted it before!
There are a lot of people who want to compete, but are afraid
because they do not know how to get started. All
bodybuilders, even the Arnold Classic winners and Mr.
Olympia's, started somewhere.
My first bit of advice -
and probably the most important - is to find a qualified
bodybuilder or trainer in your area who has worked with
successful bodybuilders. The worst thing you could do
would be to waste your time making mistakes - mistakes not
only made on your own, but mistakes made by following advice
from an unqualified person in your gym. Unfortunately,
there are a lot of people in the gym who think they have all
the answers. Most of them have never even competed.
...Find a QUALIFIED person!
This qualified
bodybuilder or trainer should be able to teach you all aspects
of bodybuilding from training, to nutrition, to posing, to
tanning, etc.
You may also want to
contact the NPC to see if they can offer you advice or put you
in touch with the NPC Chairman for your area. Their web
site is www.npcnewsonline.com.
(NPC stands for National Physique Committee and they are the
governing body of amateur bodybuilding).
Lastly, educate yourself
as best you can by reading and attending local bodybuilding
contests. When you get a chance, read all the Past Q
& As and the Training Tips on my site. I think you
will find the information helpful.
Remember, there are no
'short cuts' - becoming a successful bodybuilder takes a lot
of work and dedication. So train hard and stay focused!
Good luck, Aaron, and thanks again for the great question.
Until next month, train hard and stay
healthy.
